Writing touches everything a child does in school, yet it doesn’t come easily to most kids and can interfere with their confidence and success. I love the challenge of helping my students find their voice, put words on the page that reflect their good ideas, and fight through blocks. Some of my students struggle with daily output at school and at home and I help them gain confidence to complete tasks and feel proud of their work.
My main goal for my students is to understand themselves better as writers, to see their strengths and weaknesses and to learn strategies to be more effective editors. I offer instruction for students in grades 3-12 that enhances the current curriculum in their local school districts and provides additional guidance and practice in all writing genres.
My individualized approach allows me to be flexible and responsive to each student’s needs and growth patterns. Writing on a variety of fiction and non-fiction topics, my students embrace creative risk, develop fluency and versatility with multiple genres, and learn how to organize their ideas before they begin to write.
Another goal is to build my students’ independence, teaching them how to approach assignments and essays with a clear sense of purpose and structure, as well as developing their critical thinking skills.
